Willie Sal

Inis Gé Island off the coast of May is one of my favourite place on earth.  I heard an old man Willie Sal talking on Raidio na Gaeltachta about his life on the island and why he left and I wrote these lines in his honour. He tells of the drowning of his brother in the drowning disaster of 1927.

Willie Sal

I m' shuí sa charr trathnóna,
Mífhoighdeach,
Ag feitheamh le traein,
Báisteach throm ag titim
Clagarnach rialta-
Braon i ndiaidh braoin
Seanfhear ar an raidio
Ag caint faoi Inis Gé

Oileán i bhfad ón stáisiún
Lán coiníní is éan
Mé fós i ndordán tráchta
Greannach le moille traen'.
Is meidhreach a chuid cainte
Ach boguaigneas fós á chrá
Driotháirín leis báite
A chorp fuar ar an trá.

Gan air ach cloch is gaineamh
Le síorghluaiseacht mhall na taoide
Cúpla gobán ag freastal
Faoileáin ag scréachaíl caointe.
Ach fuaim na dtonn ina ghlór
Cé fada ó bhí sé thall
Rugadh oileán i mo chroí
Le cuntas Willie Sal.

D'éalaigh uaim an bháisteach
Níor chualas fiú an traein
Ní raibh i m' shaol ach oileán,
Wille Sal is a scéal.
Caithfead cuairt a thabhairt air
Is rachaimíd araon
rhar sáile i mbad a smaointe
Chuig a chroí in Inis Gé.

About the author

I love  writing poems in the Irish language. Most of my conversations/communications are usually in Irish as it is my favourite language in all the world.  I live in the west of Ireland, enjoying the wind, the rain and the rare glimpses of the sun.  I love the sound of the sea and the constant singing of birds and these are echoed in my verses.  I have published three books of poetry: 'Cúinne na mBard', 'Cumar na mBard' and 'An Teacht amach' with Coiscéim.  The last title has a long story behind it that I will save for another day.  I regard myself as a bard rather than a poet because most of my verses are about practical things, ordinary people and places rather than the mystic and the mysterious even though there's a touch of that here and there in some poems.  I am really just a learner in this field so bear with me and enjoy the reading as I do the writing.
