An Bhriogáid Liath

by Administrator 23. October 2008 05:11

This is a poem in support of the Grey Brigade who challenged the Government on the issue of medical card for those over seventy.  Fair play to them as the Government backed down.  There's life in the old dog yet!!

Dar fia! An Bhriogáid liath
Le claíomh is sciath
A thug fogha faoi lucht a bhfeallta
Cárta leighis an t- aighneas
Go ndeachthas ar aghaidh leis
Cheapthas na seanóirí ceallta.
Ach ní sin mar a bhí
Iad ag tuilleadh le brí
Is chiúnaigh fo-airí rialtais
Tá lucht na gcamóg
Ag seasamh a bhfód
Go bhfaighidh siad iomlán a ndioltais.

Dúnadh an sparáin
A chothaigh  callán
Nár taisceadh do lá coise tinne
Cuireadh an t-ualach ba mhó
Ar aoiseoirí seachtó
Chun a mbrostú i dtreo cré na cille.
Ach bhailigh cruinniú
I Séipéal Naomh Aindriú
Is ní paidreacha a bhí ar a mbeola
Labhraíodar d'aon ghuth
Nach nglacfaidís seo
Le nimh íde béil agus scóladh.

Mo ghoirm sibh go léir
Ach bí cinnte faoin spéir
Go mbeidh casadh eile san amhrán
Ná lig maidí le sruth
Bígí d'aon ghuth
Nuair a ghlacfaidh an Rialtas bhur ndúshlán.

Seasaigí an fód
Idir sínteoir is commód
Ná géilligí oiread na fríde
Is beidh Fianna Fáil ar neamhnaí
  Fine Gael imi' ar spraoi
Sul a shroisfidh an Dáil seo ceann scríbe!

About the author

I love  writing poems in the Irish language. Most of my conversations/communications are usually in Irish as it is my favourite language in all the world.  I live in the west of Ireland, enjoying the wind, the rain and the rare glimpses of the sun.  I love the sound of the sea and the constant singing of birds and these are echoed in my verses.  I have published three books of poetry: 'Cúinne na mBard', 'Cumar na mBard' and 'An Teacht amach' with Coiscéim.  The last title has a long story behind it that I will save for another day.  I regard myself as a bard rather than a poet because most of my verses are about practical things, ordinary people and places rather than the mystic and the mysterious even though there's a touch of that here and there in some poems.  I am really just a learner in this field so bear with me and enjoy the reading as I do the writing.
